With so much fast food about and most of us taking food on the run, it’s easy to see how we get into really bad eating habits and can develop unhealthy associations to the food that we eat. For many of us, overeating or snacking on the wrong types of food can make us pile on the pounds and you need to think about why you eat to establish a better eating pattern.
Too often we blame our genes but more often than not, we eat because we are stressed. Your lifestyle influences your weight and it’s your reaction to the events that occur in your life that need to be managed. Think back to how much you have eaten today, when you ate and of course what you ate. If you think back further to the last few days, is there a familiar pattern forming?
The quickest way to start losing weight is to first of all decrease the amount of stress that you have in your life. It’s not always easy to eradicate stress but it’s certainly a reason as to why you may ‘comfort eat’. There is a science behind this thought, basically, your stress hormones go through the roof when you are under any sort of pressure and this can make you feel like you need food. When you are stressed, you are also less likely to control the size of your portions. The problem is also that you are likely to go for quick sugary snacks as you will feel that this is what your body needs but in doing so; you can very easily fall into a vicious cycle of snacking to satisfying stress urges.
It’s not as difficult to plan ahead with your food as you might think and in fact, planning your life out largely can help you to avoid any unexpected shocks that can make you start eating erratically again. If your life is extremely busy, then you need to start taking control of your eating and you can do this quite simply by choosing your meals and pre-planning for them in advance. This means no more rushing in from work, tired and hungry and not wanting to bother with food preparation, if you are smart, you will have planned your menus and your meals and they will be ready to serve with very little care and attention needed.
If you are keen to lose weight, then in addition to planning your meals and reducing your stress levels, you also need to increase the amount of exercise that you do each day. If you have less time wasted in the kitchen, you could very quickly incorporate a twenty minute burst of exercise, whether it’s going for a quick jog or doing some cardiovascular exercise by way of a fitness DVD.
If this sounds too easy, then you need to consider that it actually is. You can take your life and shake it by the scruff of the neck and make your daily regime suit your needs. Don’t sell yourself short by thinking that you can’t do this; you owe it to yourself to eradicate any unhealthy food behaviours and to increase your fitness. You might not feel like exercising especially if your work schedule is a demanding one but the more that you do the more energy you will actually have. Plus, your body will certainly thank you for the extra tender loving care in the long run.
It may not be so easy to change your eating habits and to view your food differently but it really is important that you do so. Think about what you want to achieve and then make some small changes if this is easier to start with. Make your diet work for you and not against you.
